Typhon joins Imagine H2O Asia Cohort 3

October 2021

Typhon Treatment Systems is proud to join twelve innovators from six countries who will partner with the Singapore-based Imagine H2O Asia accelerator program to help solve South and Southeast Asia’s water and wastewater crisis

Asia is the world’s most water-stressed continent. While home to more than half of the world’s inhabitants, Asia has less freshwater available per capita than anywhere else. Population growth, particularly in low-lying coastal cities, threatens already vulnerable supplies. At the same time, too much water poses new risks. Since 2000, flood-related disasters have more than doubled globally with over 80% of people affected living in Asia.

As the COP26 summit unfolds in Glasgow, the region’s decision makers are acknowledging that its water resource challenges are inextricably linked to climate disruption. Solutions are not only needed to help mitigate today’s water-related climate impacts. They are also required to position the water and wastewater solutions of tomorrow on a new path towards decarbonization and resource recovery. Selected from a field of 100+ applicants from 23 countries, the twelve water tech startups in Imagine H2O Asia Cohort 3 give us hope by boldly challenging the water management status quo.

Typhon Quality Management System
Typhon ISO 9001 Certified

July 2021

A growing company moves at a fast pace – with many processes and procedures evolving as they go - sometimes controlled and sometimes uncontrolled.

A good quality management system help bring order to the development of those processes and procedures, bringing balance to the organisation - from the order capture to the customer invoice - from chaos to productivity.

Typhon as an organisation has recognised this from an early stage of the company’s development, making the implementation and execution of quality systems a priority.

Under the direction of Production Leader Gordon Whyte and with the assistance of MMP Business Solutions, Typhon developed a road map to achieve ISO9001-2015, as a first foundation stone on their road to world-class excellence.

Certification was awarded on 29th July 2021

ISO 9001 is the International Standard for Quality Management Systems, first published in 1987 by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), it is one of the most widely used management tools across the world with over 1 million certificates issued to organisations across 178 countries.

ISO 9001 provides a framework that ensures a common-sense approach to the management of an organization to consistently satisfy customers and other stakeholders. It is based on a set of Quality Principles, which include:

  • Customer focus
  • Leadership
  • Engagement of people
  • Process approach
  • Continual improvement
  • Evidence-based decision making
  • Relationship management

Gordon commented: “ISO Certification helps potential customers distinguish between a choice of suppliers. It doesn’t tell a customer that one supplier’s way of running a business is better than another. But it does say that their method of manufacturing a product, or providing a service, has been designed to make sure of a high-quality outcome for the customer”.

But key to any businesses Quality Management system is that it should develop, change, and adapt to the needs of a growing business

Quality Management Standards will help an organisation work more efficiently and reduce product failures.

Environmental Management Standards will help reduce environmental impacts, reduce waste and be more sustainable.

Health and Safety Standards will help to reduce accidents in the workplace and provide safe working environments for your employees, contractors and site visitors.

The next step for the Typhon journey is to seek certification for ISO 14000 and ISO 45000.

British Antarctic Survey and clean hot water drilling to access subglacial lake

February 2020

Typhon Treatment Systems Ltd. has used their photonic design capabilities to develop a bespoke UV LED surface disinfection system which will be used as a final sanitation stage for a hot water deep ice drilling project.

The British Antarctic Survey team responsible for this expedition exclusively commissioned Typhon to develop the system because using LEDs avoids the potential contamination of the site with mercury.

Cleanliness of the equipment entering the drill shaft is critical because the purpose of the expedition is to access an uncontaminated subglacial lake which has been sealed in the ice for 1,000s of years.

Validation 2 - extending the performance envelope and proving operational advantages

December 2020

Typhon Treatment Systems Ltd. have successfully carried out the second validation on their B-310 UV LED Reactor.

Testing was carried out at the Technologiezentrum Wasser (TZW) facility in Germany with 3rd Party oversight by Carollo Engineers Inc.

Testing was again conducted to the USEPA UVDGM (Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidance Manual) protocol and the Innovative Approaches guidelines.

This second validation of the B-310 Reactor was carried out primarily because the LED advancements since validation 1 in 2018 have been such that the validation envelope can now be significantly extended.

But this second round of testing has also allowed Typhon to validate some of the advantages of using LED light sources including: Modular Reactor Build; Dynamic Switching of LEDs; Reducing LED population; and in-built redundancy

Olivier Autin presents at IUVA World Congress 2019

February 2019

Typhon Treatment Systems lead process scientist Olivier Autin presents the 'Validation of a UV reactor containing UV-LEDs for the disinfection of municipal drinking water' and the results of a full-scale validation testing of Typhons B-310 UV LED Reactor conducted in July 2018 in the UK.

Testing followed the Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidance Manual (UVDGM) with some adaptations according to the draft ‘Innovative Approaches for Validation of Ultraviolet Disinfection Reactors for Drinking Water Systems’ guidelines from the US-EPA using MS2 as challenge microorganism.

This work represents what is believed to be the first large scale UV reactor containing UV-LEDs to be validated for municipal drinking water disinfection purposes using the combined variable approach.

BIO-310 USEPA UVDGM Validation

July 2018

Typhon Treatment Systems have completed the worlds first validation of a UV LED reactor.

The testing was carried out using the USEPA UVDGM protocol under the 3rd Party oversight of the renowned Jim Bolton, founder of Bolton Photosciences Inc.

The B-310 UV LED Reactor incorporates 1,000 UVC LEDs in an integrated array and marks an important staging post for the water industry in proving the concept of high-capacity UV LED Disinfection.

Traditionally a validation process establishes a set of limitations under which a UV System is able to perform, and those limitations apply through the life of the product unless a future validation resets those limitations.

However, an important aspect of the Typhon system is the ability for future generations of LEDs to be applied to the reactor and thus allow the system to take advantage of the technological advances of increased power and efficiency without the need to constantly revalidate the system.

The Validation process established a performance envelope which, as LEDs improve, will allow the performance of the reactor to track across that envelope.

MP Rory Stewart visits ‘Game Changing’ Typhon Treatment Systems

May 2017

Parliamentary Candidate for Penrith and The Border, Rory Stewart, visited Typhon Treatment Systems, a Penrith-based water treatment equipment manufacturer specializing in using ultraviolet LEDs, to learn more about how the company’s plans to reduce the cost of creating safe drinking water.

Rory was shown around the company’s facilities by Dr Matthew Simpson and Peter McNulty who both founded the company three years ago. They formed the company after working together on an off-grid water project in Nigeria, where the need for electrical efficiency and simplicity of operation inspired them to investigate the possibility of applying low power LED light sources to high flow ultraviolet water treatment equipment. None such system existed, so, in 2014 Typhon Treatment Systems was formed to create it. From there, the pair have attracted many admirers for their work and Typhon are currently working with United Utilities on a prototype project at Cumwhinton, and they are looking forward to monitoring the results over the coming months.

After giving Rory a tour of the site, the Typhon team demonstrated their patent-pending product to the MP, who was impressed by their ingenuity and the amazing potential of UV LED to treat water. Furthermore, their commitment to using local suppliers, and employing staff from the region, was commended by the MP.

Speaking about the visit Rory said: ‘Underneath all the science, is an incredible idea. Typhon is an amazing example of the the dynamic pace of business in Cumbria.’

Rory Stewart visits Typhon
